About the artist: 

The Duke of Milan. challenged Leonardo Da Vinci to build the largest equestrian statue the world had ever seen in honor of his father.17 years later. Da Vinci was still working on it. having completed numerous other famous works in the meantime. A 24-foot clay model would finally dominate the landscape in a vineyard near the Duke's castle. The bowmen of the conquering French troops used it for target practice. reducing it tragically to a mound of clay. Centuries later. it was reconstructed by Da Vinci's admirers. Legend has it that he never ceased mourning his lost horse.
